A Positive Meeting

My dad and I were asked to attend a meeting today with the medical staff who are looking after mum at FVRH. It was with a great sense of apprehension that we, along with my aunt, attended because we knew what tone the meeting was going to take. The dilemma we are faced with is that FVRH is an acute hospital and mum has reached a plateau where, although she still needs medical help, this can be given in another health facility. Dad and I have made a promise to mum that we won't send her to a hospice or a community hospice so the only option is to bring her home and nurse her ourselves with the help of the community palliative team. Our fear is that if mum is moved from Ward B12, her anxiety levels will increase to the point that she has another respiratory arrest that she won't recover from. I did not know what to expect from the meeting but the understanding and support we received from the hospital was above and beyond our expectations. They were marvellous. They are going to make small, subtle changes with mum in terms of her medication, her mobility and her state of mind. They are keeping her there for at least another 4 weeks when we will meet again to assess how the changes have impacted mum and to see what the next step is. More importantly, they are also going to investigate what help dad and I will get should mum come home. I will sleep a lot better tonight than I did last night!
